Escaped Hamster Forces Plane to Land

    Friday, September 29, 2006

    Assoicated Press

INNSBRUCK, Austria —  It wasn't "Snakes on a Plane," but an Austrian Airlines jet made an unscheduled stop as a precaution Friday after a passenger sneaked a hamster aboard and the rodent escaped.

The flight from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to the southern Austrian city of Graz made a stop in Innsbruck so officials could search for the furry stowaway and make sure it didn't gnaw through any cables, the airline said in a statement.

It said the flight was diverted after a passenger notified the crew that he had brought a hamster aboard and had lost track of the animal. Passengers were ordered off the plane, and some were taken by bus to Graz. It was not immediately clear how many people were aboard the disrupted flight.

By mid-afternoon, a search of the aircraft still had not turned up any sign of the hamster, authorities said.

Austrian Airlines said the jet would remain grounded until the hamster was found "because it can't take off that way for safety reasons."

    This and That

I'm on break from school ...WOO HOO!!!  I wish I could say "PARTY" but that's not the case, more like "painting".  UGH  Besides painting I have been trying to catch up on some well needed sleep.  I love to sleep.  What else? hmmmmmmmm ... Oh, I've scanned a bunch of pics from NYC just before and after 9/11, I'm still working on getting them ready to post.  And finally, next on my list o' blog things to do ...my 101 list.  Yeah I know I should have done that a long time ago and I started one at one point but stopped for some reason.

Now I think I want some ice cream and then I'll get crackin' on the 101 list.  Yes, that's the plan.

Update: Ice cream was good, pictures are posted.  I had the pictures all in order but MSN sorted them alphabetically, I'm too tired to see if I can fix it.

    Bargaining

Two blogs in one morning?  This was too funny not to write (to me at least).

Potty training.  Any parent knows how much time is spent convincing a young child that using the potty is a better option than crapping in their pants.  Some kids pick up right away, others do not.  I have been blessed with 2 children, that for some reason didn't want to partake.  The latest adventure has finally caught on and the day of diapers/pull-ups are over.  It took longer than expected for half of the trainging process, that being poop.  I offered up everything from stickers to a new bike but none of it worked.  Then I discovered the one thing that would change my life forever ...fruit snacks.  Those chewy little snacks shaped like characters, Scooby Doo comes highly recommended, that I don't approve of because they're bad for your teeth.  It worked.  Turns out that little bag of fruit snacks was enough incentive to finish the potty training phase for good.  Now he just goes on his own not even thinking about it.  FINALLY!!

This morning I'm sitting here, visiting my space friends, and the announcement is made: "I have to poop".  Why this needs to be announced is beyond me but ok ...just get up there and go.  There's still a bit of ritual surrounding going to the bathroom, a sticker book is required, I guess it makes for a more enjoyable experience.  So he's going through the sticker book and I'm standing there waiting.  He looks up at me all serious and says "you have fruit snacks?".  It was all I could do to keep the laughter in, he's a junkie!  I said "I don't know, just poop".  Little minds never forget.

    Things that fly

Bugs ...I don't care for them.  I know they serve a purpose but still ...I don't have to like them.

It started early as I was about to take a shower.  I open the curtain and there's a huge spider.  He's dead now.  The real problem began when I was painting the living room.  It seemed as if every bug in the hood was in my living room just waiting to seal their fate in a fresh coat of primer.  Stupid bugs.  It's bad enough to have them flying around but when you're trying to paint ...UGH!  I'm pretty sure I rolled over a few on the walls, picking out the ones I could identify.  Reason #127 why to hate bugs: they fly into fresh paint.

    Let's Go Yankees!!!

Yanks celebrate ninth straight East title
Bombers fall to Jays, but clinch division with Red Sox loss
    By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

TORONTO -- It's not very often that you will see the Yankees whooping it up in the clubhouse after a loss. In fact, it's not very often that you will see the Yankees whoop it up after a win.

On Wednesday night, about 30 minutes after losing to the Blue Jays, 3-2, the Yankees sat and watched the Twins finish off the Red Sox, 8-2, on the big-screen television in the visitor's clubhouse at the Rogers Centre.

    That's when the party started.

Corks were popping, champagne and beer was flying through the air and tears were flowing as the Yankees clinched their ninth straight American League East title.

"When the Twins got three runs in the top of the ninth, everybody grabbed a shirt and hat," said Mike Mussina, sporting a soaking-wet AL East championship T-shirt and backwards hat. "[Manager] Joe [Torre] gave his little toast to congratulate us on our accomplishment -- then we had a little fun."

"I just congratulated them, toasted them and told them how proud I was of them," Torre said. "It was simple."

The celebration scene looked like any other division-winning clubhouse in baseball, which is a little strange considering the regularity with which it has happened for the Yankees.

But with each new year comes new faces, as Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera and a host of other newcomers got their first taste of victory champagne in New York.

"This team always goes to the playoffs, so you always want to be part of this," Abreu said. "This is what it's all about: winning and celebrating."

"We have a lot of guys that haven't been here before, they're actually experiencing what we have over the years," Bernie Williams said. "As an old guy being here, year after year it never gets old. It's a great feeling of accomplishment."

    Gripe of the day ...

Why isn't there a cent symbol on the keyboard?  There's a dollar symbol.  Last I knew we haven't eliminated change, not even pennies.  Speaking of pennies, how useless are they anyway?  The only thing they're good for is clutter.  And dirty ...money is so dirty.  Ever stop to think how many hands have touched the money in your wallet?  Don't do it, it will only gross you out in the end.  A movement of some sort is needed!  I propose we all have chips installed somewhere about our person that acts as an ATM card.  Yes, that's what needs to be done.  This will eliminate the spread of germs and clutter.

But I digress, where is the cent symbol?  I don't like, not one bit.  .01 - .99 are not represented on the modern day keyboard.  And I'm not buying into the theory that I should use $0.25 because that's an extra key stroke.

Can anyone answer this for me?

    Take a look around

Tonight I'm sitting here, in my bedroom, with the windows open.  There's a chill in the air which got me to thinking that winter is quickly approaching.  Then my thoughts shifted to those men, women and children on the street who might not have a place to sleep tonight.  I hate that it takes cold weather to remind me of the things we take for granted.  It's not that these issues aren't on my mind, but more times than not the thoughts just pass through my head.  Some of you know that I try to be active when I can to support awareness of the homeless situation in America.  I don't feel as if I'm doing as much as I should and it's one of the things that I would like to change in the upcoming months.  Yeah I know what you're thinking ...when do you think you're going to find the time.  Well, I haven't figured that out yet.  Perhaps with improved organizational and time management skills, I'll be able to do everything I want to do.  We shall see!

Here's a bit of information on the Homeless Action Committee (HAC), a local shelter that I have personal ties to (taken from their website which is located at the top left of this screen):

Formed in May 1989, the Homeless Action Committee (HAC) has extensive experience working with the street population in the City of Albany.  HAC has been a strong advocate in the community and has worked tirelessly to end homelessness in Albany.  HAC operates a permanent housing program and provides outreach and services to people who live on the streets of Albany.

HAC’s Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing program is for individuals with alcoholism who had been living on the streets for many years and who have been unable to maintain sobriety.  Each tenant has his/her own room.  Three meals per day are provided in a 24 hour staffed facility.  All tenants have improved their health, mental health, and many have dramatically increased their sobriety.  In 2001, 16 tenants were sober 25% or more of the time and 11 of the 16 were sober 50% or more of the time.  This housing has helped improve the quality of life for tenants, increased their self-esteem and stability.

HAC also operates an Outreach Van program, which has assisted hundreds of people on the streets by providing them with compassionate human contact, a listening ear, food, clothing, blankets, referrals and transportation to area resources.  Crisis intervention services are provided.  HAC van staff and volunteers work diligently to get people off the streets and into treatment, shelter or housing.

*As always, do what you can to donate to a charity of your choice.  Remember a donation does not have to be in the form of money, time is just as valuable (if not more).

    I'm on a mission

This session of school has been exhausting.  It has been rough from the start and I've been putting in some long hours.  So to help combat the sleep depravation I have been trying to become a coffee drinker.  I hate coffee, it's bitter, but I like coffee ice cream so there has to be a common ground.

I prefer tea, no cream, no sugar, iced or hot.  This coffee thing, I don't get it.  My attempts so far have failed.  Here is what I have tried so far:
Day one -  I tried an ice coffee with cream and sugar, it was bitter and gross.
Day two - I tried a flavored ice coffee with cream and sugar, again bitter and gross.
Day three - I tried something hot, a carmel swirl cappuccino with skim milk and splenda, it was ok.
Day four - I tried a french vanilla cappuccino with skim milk and splenda, it was so-so.

SIGH ...It's just not doing it for me but I really need the caffine.

FDA to consumers: Don't eat ANY fresh spinach

    POSTED: 10:48 a.m. EDT, September 18, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Monday consumers should not eat any fresh spinach as investigators look for the source of E. coli bacteria that has sickened at least 109 people.

The initial FDA advisory late last week focused on bagged spinach.

Dr. Robert Brackett of the FDA told CNN, "We've expanded the warning actually to all of the fresh spinach. That's because we learned that some of the companies that produced the consumer bag spinach also produced larger food-service size.

Brackett said another concern is that restaurants or stores may use consumer-size bags of spinach to stock their salad bars or bulk bins.

"We want to make sure consumers are aware that they don't consume any of the fresh spinach. We don't know whether it came from the bag or another state. We just don't have the focus down that much yet," he said.

Spinach producers are voluntarily recalling their products. Brackett said the FDA does not have the power to order a recall but is working with the producers.

They do have the power to seize contaminated products, but Brackett said investigators can't do that until they determine the exact source of the contamination.

"It could come from the irrigation water, animals in the field, from the workers, from a piece of equipment that's contaminated. We just don't know," he said. "Until we figure that out, we don't want to go down the wrong road. We're looking at all possibilities."

The number of people sickened by the E. coli bacteria traced to fresh spinach has reached 109.

My take: Popeye is disappointed that he's not in syndication and has taken action to bring spinich back to the headlines

    Cleaning house

As you know, my house has been under re-construction since the beginning of summer.  Here it is, September 16th, the upstairs is finished and Monday begins what might be the worse part of all ...the downstairs.  Remember back when I thought adding on would be so much easier than moving?  Boy was I wrong!  Though it is true that I have survived everyone living on the first floor all summer long, now we'll be living on the second floor.  *sigh*

I spent this afternoon packing up my kitchen, not all of it but the furniture has to go for the new floor so I had to clean out my bakers rack.  It's sad looking at it all empty, my cookbooks packed away.  Also gone is anything that was on my counter top, as they are going to be replacing the tile on the backsplash.  Beginning Monday I will have nowhere to sit, no table to eat off of, the kitchen will be closed.

But wait ...there's more!  My entire living room will be gone too.  These contractors are good with the multi-tasking because they will be installing hardwood floors in the living room and hallway.  What does this mean for me?  No desk to do my school work (even though I've been doing it in the kitchen these days, won't be able to do that either), no TV (not that I've had time to watch any) and no place for anyone to sit.  I guess I'll be ok living in my room but the kids are going to have problems ...did I mention no TV?

Tomorrow will be the most fun, I'm pulling out the fridge and the stove to clean behind them.  I'll also vacuum once all the furniture is out.  I'm not quiet sure why I'm going to bother with the vacuum since the carpet will be ripped out on Monday.  It's a Kim thing.

In the end I know it will be worth it and maybe I'll even have the house straightened out by Christmas (100 days for those of you who are counting).  But the next time you guys find me saying that 'I think I'll add on', tell me to just go find a bigger house.

Not that I left but I'm back ...

    Time for a change ...

I've been so busy with all that's going on in my life that it's come to the point where I need to re-group.  It's been a rough few weeks and I need to make some changes.  Where to start ...my blog of course!  New background, a little more colorful than the last, moved some things around and a new song playing (you can find the lyrics under my favorite lyrics).  I'm bringing some of my lists back to life, the bird flu (it's getting to be that time of the year), the headline of the week (to be posted on Fridays) and my new gripe of the day.  Yes, I'll make every effort to maintain them as best as I can.

New readers ...I think I might have a few ...hmmmm ...yes I do!  Welcome to life as I see things.  I think you'll find yourselves amused, sometimes caught off guard, maybe even scared.  I call it like I see it.  So how do I know you're out there ... it's all in the stats.  You google searchers, I know you type the same thing to find yourself back here.  Why not just take down the URL?  No matter how you get here, I do hope you enjoy your stay.

To my regular reads, I know I have been slacking.  School has kept me busier than I would like but it's almost time for a week off!  I have to admit, I haven't felt much like writing.  Not because I don't have anything to say, you know me better than that.  I've just been kind of blah, no more blah, I'm done with blah.

    ps: 102 days til Christmas!!

OK MSN ...you win!  I will change my age myself.  They used to take care of these things for us but noooooooo, not any more.

Anna Nicole Smith's son dies visiting mom in hospital

Anna Nicole Smith's son dies visiting mom in hospital

    POSTED: 11:39 a.m. EDT, September 12, 2006

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- The 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith died while visiting his mother in the hospital where the reality TV star and former Playboy playmate had given birth last week, a Bahamas police official said Monday.

Daniel Wayne Smith was visiting his mother in her room at Doctors Hospital in Nassau when he died Sunday, Reginald Ferguson, assistant commissioner of the Royal Bahamian Police Force, told The Associated Press. He said an autopsy was under way.

Smith arrived Saturday night in the Bahamas, and apparently went directly to the hospital where he spent the night in his mother's room, Ferguson said.

"It would appear from our report that the mother had gotten up, saw him in the chair and he appeared to be sound asleep," he said. "She tried to wake him up, he was unresponsive, and she sounded the alarm."

Medical personnel arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene, Ferguson said.

Anna Nicole Smith, 38, gave birth to a healthy 6-pound, 9-ounce girl at the hospital Thursday, her Web site said.

"Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being," a statement on the site said. It said that drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

Her son had traveled to the Caribbean country "to share in the joy of his baby sister," the statement said. "Please do not make any press inquiries at this time so that Anna Nicole can grieve in peace."

Daniel Smith was the product of Smith's 1985 marriage to Billy Smith. The couple, who met while working together at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken in Mexia, Texas, divorced in 1987.

Daniel Smith had small roles in his mother's movies "Skyscraper" and "To the Limit."

Robin Bonnema, a spokeswoman for Trimspa, the diet products company that has been endorsed by Smith, said she did not know the name of the baby girl's father.

Smith married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year.

She then feuded with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over her entitlement to the tycoon's estate before he died in June at the age of 67.

In the long-running dispute, Smith had won a $474 million judgment, which was later cut to about $89 million and eventually reduced to zero. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could continue to pursue the fortune in federal courts in California despite a Texas state court ruling that Marshall's youngest son was the sole heir.

Think what you want of Anna, like her, hate her ...just give her time to grieve.

    A Day of Rememberance

    Never forget ...

    Gripe of the day

Two days in a row ...

Today is September 9th.  It rained today, not all day but most of the afternoon.  So who do you think I saw while it was raining?  That's right ...Mr. Ding-a-Ling (the ice cream truck).  Here it is the first weekend after school starts and the ice cream man is driving through the hood, in the rain.  I haven't seen that damn ice cream truck all summer!  The first sighting is usually in late April, early May, and then you don't see him again until school starts back up.  What's wrong with this picture?  When I was little the ice cream truck came around twice a day, once late morning and then again around dinner time (nice timing).  Not now.  Of course I work during the day so I can't positively say that he hasn't been by but I'm home before 5:00 ...no ice cream man.  But today, a rainy day in September, you can get ice cream.

    Gripe of the day

Actually ...it's the gripe of the month so far!

I've been too busy to blog!!!  Can I just tell you that I cannot wait for the day when I don't have an assignment due, furniture to move, walls to paint, laundry to do.  OK, the laundry thing is never going to go away, fine.

Yes, the house is moving along.  We're in the process of moving into our new bedrooms.  Yes, I'm still in school.  It's tourture this time around, pure hell.  OK, I can't compare it to hell but it has to be close.  Just two more weeks and I get a break.  I'm also still working.  Thankfully, it hasn't been too stressful at work.  I'm just short of losing my mind as it is
