2006/11/30 What I want for ChristmasIt's that time of year again and the most common question asked is "what do you want for Christmas". Some people will respond and say "I don't want/need anything", others will run down a list a mile long. Every year when I'm asked this question I give the same response "Peace on Earth", which is usually followed by silence, then "well, that's not happening so what else do you want?". I am sincere when I say I want Peace on Earth and I'm also realistic and know it will never happen (not in my lifetime at least). So I'm thinking I need to modifiy my request in the hopes that something on my new list could be achieved or at least reduced.
1. Peace on Earth (yes, I know it's not happening but I refuse to remove it from my list)
2. End the war in Iraq (we're not going to change anything there for the same reasons that my first wish cannot be granted)
3. Stop crimes against children
4. Resolve the homeless situation in the US
5. End hunger in the US
6. End discrimination
7. Approve same sex marriage
8. Apporve stem cell research
9. Be kind to others
10. Stop animal cruelty Countdown ...25 Days til Christmas!!! WOO HOO!!!
I need to start my shopping. Yes, I know, one would think that someone like me would have that done already. Not so much 2006/11/28 Now Playing ...DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS
Band Aid It's Christmas time There's no need to be afraid At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time But say a prayer Pray for the other ones At Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun There's a world outside your window And it's a world of dread and fear Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring there Are the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time The greatest gift they'll get this year is life (Oooh) Where nothing ever grows No rain nor rivers flow Do they know it's Christmas time at all (Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone (Here's to them) underneath that burning sun Do they know it's Christmas time at all Feed the world, feed the world, feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmas time again Countdown ...27 Days til Christmas!! 2006/11/22 It's the most wonderful time of the year ...Well, almost. Thanksgiving doesn't get the recognition it deserves as a holiday. Retailers go from Halloween to Christmas and expect the rest of us to follow suit. It's sad if you ask me. I never did find an inflatable turkey for my lawn, I'll have to order one online for next year. *sigh*
In just 2 short days the holiday season will be in full swing. This morning on my way in to work I heard Christmas music on the radio. That's right ...before Thanksgiving. A couple radio channels change their format to all Christmas music from now until New Years. As much as I don't like to skip a holiday, I did enjoy some holiday tunes on my way to work.
Work ...why am I working today? It seems as if the rest of the world has today off or at least 3/4 of our building. I'm working on Friday too! Boy, I didn't plan this one right. 2006/11/18 Still got itA month ago my son started a learn to skate program for hockey. He's only 3.5 but it's never to early to start. Personally, I think he'll end up on the figure skating circuit and that's ok too. He's the youngest one in the program and is having a little trouble getting up on his own (if he were taking figure skating he would have a toe pick). Once he's up he doesn't stay there long but he has heart. He gets so excited on Saturday mornings and can't wait to get out there. I think he'll do well but he'll be taking his learn to skate again next year.
Today I stepped on the ice for the first time in years. I have a new pair of skates that were sharpened up today (even the price on skate sharpening has increased OY!). I was a little worried, not really but kind of, that I would fall flat on my ass. That first step I was like ...ohhhh here I go. Much to my surprise it was like riding a bike, it came right back to me. Thank God! After a couple times around the rink and turning around to see if I could still go backwards I was good to go. After a couple more times around my legs were feeling it and I'm pretty sure I'll have trouble getting out of bed tomorrow. LOL
This is all good, I'll take the pain. Getting out on the ice again (and please don't think I'm a professional or anything, it's just an old hobby) felt good. It's good exercise and I'm not sitting at home on the couch. Getting out is a good thing! Now if I keep telling myself that I might actually begin to believe it. The ice skating rink is just minutes from work and they have open skating around lunch time so my plan is to go there a couple days a week for lunch. The pain eventually goes away, right?
2006/11/16 Is it Friday yet?You know it's bad when ...
You take a nap at 8:00pm only to wake up thinking it's the next day. I'm not talking, waking up and thinking it's the next morning. Last night (Wed) I took a little nap. When I woke up I thought for sure it was Thursday night and why wasn't CSI on?? I switched the channels back and forth for a few minutes until I realized it was still Wednesday night. OY! 2006/11/14 Quote of the dayHeadline of the weekThis one can't wait til Friday!
Calif. Couple Faces Federal Charges for Frisky Flight Behavior Tuesday , November 14, 2006 Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. — A California couple are facing federal charges after allegedly refusing to stop "overt sexual activity" on a flight to Raleigh. Carl Warren Persing, of Lakewood, Calif., and Dawn Elizabeth Sewell, of Huntington Beach, Calif., were indicted on charges of interfering with flight crew members during their Sept. 15 Southwest Airlines flight from Los Angeles. According to court documents, flight attendants saw Persing and Sewell kissing, embracing and "acting in a manner that made other passengers uncomfortable" while the plane was stopped in Phoenix. A flight attendant asked them to stop. They obeyed initially but resumed the behavior during the flight from Phoenix to Raleigh, authorities said. When the flight attendant again requested them to stop, Persing allegedly told the flight attendant: "I'm going to give you one warning to get out of my face." Persing and Sewell continued the verbal harassment after a flight attendant refused to serve Persing alcohol, according to court documents. Law enforcement officials were waiting for the couple when they arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Messages left by The Associated Press for Persing and Sewell's attorneys were not returned. 2006/11/13 All Fours FamilyThis story has been out for a while now but today is the first I've heard about it. I have to thank my Mom for filling me in on this one, Thanks Mom! (she doesn't even have internet connection, she'll never see this LOL). Since I am new to the story myself I'll paste an article here but there's a special on tomorrow night, Tuesday the 14th, on PBS at 8:00PM EST (check your local listings), it's a NOVA special. It's an amazing stroy and I can't wait to watch the documentary.

Family may provide evolution clue Five siblings from Turkey who walk on all fours could provide science with an insight into human evolution, researchers have said.
The four sisters and one brother could yield clues to why our ancestors made the transition from four-legged to two-legged animals, says a UK expert. But Professor Nicholas Humphrey rejects the idea that there is a "gene" for bipedalism, or upright walking. A BBC documentary about the family will be shown on Friday 17 March. Professor Humphrey, from the London School of Economics (LSE), says that our own species' transition to walking on two feet must have been a more complex process that involved many changes to the skeleton and to the human genetic make-up. However, a German group says a genetic abnormality does seem to be involved in the siblings' gait. Coordination problem Three of the sisters and one brother have only ever walked on two hands and two feet, but another sister alternates between a bipedal and quadrupedal gait. Another brother walks on two feet all the time, but only with difficulty. The siblings live with their parents and five other brothers and sisters. They were born with what looks like a form of brain damage.
MRI scans seem to show that they have a form of cerebellar ataxia, which affects balance and coordination. However, scientists are divided on what caused them to revert to quadrupedalism (walking on all fours). The method of locomotion used by the Turkish children and by our closest relatives chimpanzees and gorillas, differs in a crucial way, said Professor Humphrey. While gorillas and chimpanzees walk on their knuckles, the Turkish siblings put their weight on the wrists, lifting their fingers off the ground. Tool use "What's significant about that is that chimpanzees ruin their fingers walking like that," Professor Humphrey, an evolutionary psychologist, told the BBC News website. "These kids have kept their fingers very agile, for example, the girls in the family can do crochet and embroidery."
He added that calluses pictured on the hands of one family member demonstrated that the behaviour was not a hoax. Professor Humphrey said this could be the way that humankind's direct ancestors walked. Hands which have kept the fingers dextrous would also have been able to manipulate tools, a key development which influenced the evolution of the human body and intelligence. "I think it's possible that what we are seeing in this family is something that does correspond to a time when we didn't walk like chimpanzees but was an important step between coming down from the trees and becoming fully bipedal," the LSE researcher said. 'Infant walking' Professor Humphrey thinks that the brain abnormality simply caused the siblings to rediscover a form of locomotion used by our ancestors. "Because of the peculiar circumstances they were in, they kept walking as infants," he said. But a team led by Stefan Mundlos of the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, Germany, thinks that the genetic abnormality which causes the children's unusual gait may have played a more fundamental role in evolution. Professor Mundlos has located the gene on chromosome 17 and speculates that a gene important in the transition to bipedalism may have been knocked out in the children. Producer on the documentary Jemima Harrison said the programme's producers were moved by the family's "tremendous warmth and humanity". **to find out more visit: http://www.allfoursfamily.org/ 2006/11/11 Time for pieThe National Pie Contest is on Food Network and I should have been there! *sigh* That's it ...starting tomorrow I'm back in the kitchen to come up with an award winning pie recipe or at least one that will get me entered into the contest. If anyone has any suggestions please leave a comment. Right now I'm thinking of a chocolate/mocha cream pie with a graham cracker/almond crust. I also make a pretty good apple/carmel pie, maybe I could add some nuts to that? So many possibilities so little time. 2006/11/9 I should blogHere in lies my problem ...
I have a lot to say, only I don't feel as if I can write freely here. Good grief, I've been censored on my own blog! How does something like this happen? Corporate America ...that's how! *sigh* 2006/11/8 Politically motivatedI'm old enough to become President but I don't want the pressure that comes with that job! So what's a girl to do? I love politics and I'm feeling the need to get involved but how? Am I too old? Where do I begin? I suppose registering with a party would be the first step. Of course I'm a registered voter but I'm registered as an Independent. Yes, that's where I'll begin. Don't ask me where I'll go from there, I'm new to this after all Election ResultsLookin' good! 2006/11/7 Happy Election DayGet out and vote!!!
Despite what you may think, every vote counts! I am not affiliated with a party but usually vote for the Democratic candidate. This election day will be different and I'm hoping that my vote might make a difference in one particular race. What race is that you ask? NYS Attorney General. I have to put my support behind Jeanine Pirro. Don't vote along party lines, vote on what you feel is right!
My support is also going to Hillary and Kirsten ...go get 'em girls!!
AND ...I want to wish a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my Grandmother who is 93 years young today!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEME!! She filled out her ballot last week and mailed it in. I'm pretty sure she would have made an excellent politician if it was allowed in her day! 2006/11/6 Gobble GobbleDue to the fact that I've been under the weather, I do not have Tom the Turkey on my front lawn ...yet!
In other news ... There have been some big things going on at work, scandal and all. I'm waiting to see how that turns out before I report. Tomorrow is election day, get out and vote but do so with some degree of knowledge. If you don't know who's running or for what, please either take the time to do some research and become informed or just skip voting altogether. Educate yourself America!
2006/11/3 To whom it may concernWhy? Why is Christmas being forced upon us just days after Halloween? You all know I love Christmas but this is pushing it. Who can I talk to about this? Really, it started in July, yes July. Hallmark had their ornaments out, then they slowly increase the amount of merchandise until BAM ...Christmas is in full swing.
I went to JC Penny's today and what did I hear? That's right ...Christmas music!!!! OK, I know I had a seasonal song on just last month but it was a snow song, not Christmas ...totally different. SIGH There are unwritten rules people! YOU CAN'T SKIP A HOLIDAY!! Poor Tom the Turkey ...he's not represented. UGH ...Christmas music! Again, who do I see about this? There ought to be a law.
Tom, fear not! I will save the Thanksgiving season, please see below. If all goes according to plan this puppy will be up and running by Sunday afternoon. 2006/11/2 Welcome to the Great NortheastToday is November 2nd and ...
I am sick and ...
there's snow on the ground!
Time to brush up on the old H5N1 and see if there are any new strains. Flu shots ...don't forget to get your flu shot! Increase your vitamin C intake. Keep tissues on hand. Wipe all surfaces down on a regular basis. Whatever you do don't touch a railing or door knob with you bare hand, use a tissue or avoid it all together. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
**Lunch hour update: Just when you think it can't get any worse ...feeling under the weather calls for only one thing for lunch ...soup. As you all know I have become rather fond of the chicken and corn chowder at Quiznos, so off I went to get a bowl for lunch. Much to my dismay, they have relpaced the chicken and corn chowder with clam chowder! Clam chowder?! yuck! Who want's clam chowder? Not me! I went for the old stand-by, chicken noodle. |
