    Driving tip of the day

Follow the arrows that are painted in the parking lot!  Is it THAT hard to figure it out?  I mean, first off you have an arrow telling you what direction to go.  Secondly, can't you tell by the way the cars are parked which way you should be going??  UGH ...Can't you tell by the degree of difficulty it takes to get into a parking spot ...doesn't that clue you in that you're facing the wrong direction??  AND ...why is it that the people who are going to wrong direction look at me like I'm the one who's wrong?  I hate people!

*no humans were harmed in the writing of this blog, I cannot speak for the parking lot

    Happy Halloween

    YAWN

Long time no blog.  To sum it up ...I'm tired.  I could have slept all day yesterday.  It was the perfect day for it, it was pouring out.  No need to get out of bed when it's raining.  As a matter of fact, I just woke up from a little nap.  Maybe it's the time change, now it's dark at like 5:00.  Or maybe it's because I work full time with 2 kids, go to school and my house is still not totally put back together.  It's probably a combination of everything.  UGH ...off to do school work.

New Jersey court recognizes same-sex unions

    POSTED: 3:31 p.m. EDT, October 25, 2006

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- New Jersey's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples.

But the court left it to the legislature to determine whether the state will honor gay marriage or some other form of civil union.

The case was brought by seven gay couples who say the state constitution allows them to marry.

New Jersey is one of only five U.S. states with neither a law nor a state constitutional amendment blocking same-sex marriage. As a result, the state is more likely than others to allow gays to wed, said advocacy groups on both sides.

Only Massachusetts -- by virtue of a 2003 ruling from that state's top court -- allows gay marriages.

Proponents and opponents from across the country are watching the case closely.

"New Jersey is a stepping stone," said Matt Daniels, president of the Virginia-based Alliance for Marriage, a group pushing for an amendment to the federal Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage. "It's not about New Jersey."

From a practical standpoint, the Massachusetts court decision made little impact nationally because the state has a law barring out-of-state couples from wedding there if their marriages would not be recognized in their home states.

New Jersey has no such law.

People on both sides of the issue expect a victory for same-sex unions would make New Jersey a destination for gay couples from around the country who want to get married. Some of those couples could return home and sue to have their marriages recognized.

Daniels said gay-rights advocates are already looking ahead to such lawsuits. "Their game, of course, is they figure all they need to do is execute this maneuver in a half-dozen states and they'll have the momentum," he said.

David S. Buckel, the Lambda Legal lawyer who argued on behalf of the seven New Jersey couples, said he expects some couples would travel to the New Jersey to get married if his suit is successful. But, he said, "it won't be tidal."

Buckel said that there have been relatively few such lawsuits filed in the U.S. by couples who went to Canada to exchange vows.

And, he said, while many same-sex couples would prefer to be married, they are getting more legal protections for their relationships. Several states, including New Jersey, offer domestic partnerships or civil unions with some of the benefits of marriage. A growing number of employers are treating same-sex couples the same way they treat married couples.

Cases similar to New Jersey's are pending in California, Connecticut, Iowa and Maryland.

Conservatives watching the cases believe the best chance for gay marriage to be allowed would be in New Jersey, where the state Supreme Court has a history of extending civil rights protections.

Gay marriage supporters have had a two-year losing streak, striking out in state courts in New York and Washington state and in ballot boxes in 15 states where constitutions have been amended to ban same-sex unions.

    Now playing ...

This song is so silly, it cracks me up every time I hear it.

    Be My Yoko Ono
    Barenaked Ladies

If there's someone you can live without, then do so.
And if there's someone you can just shove out, do so.

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono.

Isn't it beautiful to see two people so much in love?
Barenaked as two virgins hand in hand and hand and hand in glove.
Now that I'm far away it doesn't seem to me to be such a pain.
To have you hanging off my ankle like some kind of ball and chain.

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono.

Oh no, here we go, our life is just one big pun.
Oh no, here we go as Yoko sings
    Aieee!

I know that when I say this
I may be stepping on pins and needles.
But I don't like all these people
slagging her for breaking up the Beatles.
    (Don't blame it on Yokey!)
If I was John and you were Yoko,
I would gladly give up musical genius,
just to have you as my very own, personal Venus.
    (Hit it!)

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono.

    Back on track

Last night I went to my first Weight Watchers meeting since the beginning of September.  Between the house being torn apart and a rough session at school I decided I needed a break from what was my Monday night routine.  As if construction wasn't bad enough, I didn't have use of my kitchen for about a month.  This wasn't helping the weight loss cause one bit.  I knew I needed to get back to it but was putting it off.  Then I got a call from one of the ladies that goes to WW, she's also my AVON connection.  I saw the message and it took 2 days before I called her back.  She was probably wondering where I've been but as it turns out she wanted to know if I wanted an AVON book.  LOL  That call made me realize that it was time to get back on track.
The time came to get weighed in ...ugh!  I had to convince myself that it was going to be OK and I could face the group of people that I haven't seen in a while.  I suppose there's a degree of guilt there.  When I opened the door our leader was there with open arms, she was happy to see me and I was happy to see her.  I explained my situation and stepped up to the scale.  For those of you who think I'm about to tell you what I weighed in at you're crazy.  LOL  The good news was that I didn't gain much in the time I was gone.  This made me more happy because it got me to thinking that maybe I have been paying better attention to what I eat.  That or there was just  no food in the house.
The topic of the meeting was fears.  What are the fears that you face in your attempt to lose weight, are you afraid to tell people no, are you afraid to ask for help, etc.  It seemed like the perfect topic since just minutes before my fear was walking through the door.  I didn't really have anything to fear, most of the people there have taken time off but there's just something about getting there.  I was happy to see the people in my group and I realized that this is home on Monday nights.
Since I'm on a roll here, I would like to remind people that weight has become a serious problem in the U.S.  It is important to eat right and stay active.  Easier said than done, believe me I know!  I don't face the struggle that most face, I'm just trying to battle 10-20lbs that come and go, but even a few pounds can make a difference to one's health.  Consider this my public service announcement.  LOL

    HA!

I've been trying to add this song since yesterday and it finally worked!  Now I'm left wondering what the problem was.  Probably user error!  LOL

Inmate uses laxatives to flee jail
    POSTED: 5:41 a.m. EDT, October 20, 2006
    Associated Press

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- An inmate who used laxatives to shed 14 kilograms (31 pounds) so he could squeeze through a hole in a prison wall had been frustrated by the indefinite sentence he was serving, a judge said Friday.

Robert Cole, 37, spent three days on the run from police in January after slipping his 56-kilogram (123-pound) frame through a 15-centimeter (6-inch) wide hole he had chiseled with a butter knife in the widow frame of a hospital wing at Sydney's Long Bay Jail.

Cole, who had been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment, spent three weeks scraping the brickwork near the window bars to widen the space, the New South Wales state District Court Judge Roger Dive said.

Dive sentenced Cole Friday two years and two months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escape. The sentence was backdated to his recapture on January 21.

When he escaped, Cole had been serving an indefinite sentence in the prison hospital after a jury found him not guilty of armed robbery in 2003 on the grounds of mental illness.

Dive accepted Cole was "very frustrated" at the time of his escape, as "he did not have a definite date of release and no apparent treatment plan."

Cole's sister, Australian television actress Denise Roberts, told the court her brother had "put on a lot of weight" since he was recaptured and sent to a different prison.

After serving his sentence, Cole will remain in the prison hospital until government authorities decide he is no longer a public danger.

    Bad Day

    BITE ME!

That's what my original post was going to be.  But then I started to think about my regular reads and I didn't want them thinking it was aimed at them or anyone else in our blogging community.  It's all work related folks but I can't get into it right now.  I usually try to keep things upbeat here, mainly because that's how I am, always think of the positive because it could always be worse.  That statement still holds true but let's face it, we all have bad days and today I'm having one.  So, don't take my music selection as a sign that I've gone off the deep end.  LOL  It's just the theme of the day.

Update 6:30PM:  OK, the work day is over, I came home, took a nice hot shower and I'm feeling much better.  I'm even going to change my music but to what??

    Happy Sunday!

It's my favorite day of the week!  For some reason I just love Sunday's.  Today will be the best one in a long time (or so it seems).  My kitchen is finally back together which means I can cook!  We've been dining out for the past month and quite frankly I'm sick of it.  I haven't figured out exactly what I'm going to make but I do know it won't come with fries.  Not only will I be able to cook, we're going apple picking so I can bake too!  Yes, it's a going to be a good day!

hmmmmmm ...I think it's time to start preparing for the pie contest once again!

ps: I promise to get rid of the Christmas music tomorrow, I got caught up in the thought of snow when Buffalo got dumped on :)

First Snow of Season Hits Western New York, Leaves 155,000 Without Electricity

    Friday , October 13, 2006

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A rare early October snowstorm left parts of western New York blanketed with 2 feet of snow Friday morning, prompting widespread blackouts, closing schools and halting traffic.

The snow downed scores of tree limbs and toppled power lines, leaving more than 155,000 customers without electricity.

By early Friday, 14 inches of snow had been recorded at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, with reports of 2 feet elsewhere, said Tom Paone, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The snowfall was expected to continue throughout the morning, he said.

On Thursday, 8.3 inches of heavy snow set the record for the "snowiest" October day in Buffalo in the 137-year history of the weather service, said meteorologist Tom Niziol. The previous record of 6 inches was set Oct. 31, 1917.

"This is an extremely rare event for this early in the season," Niziol said.

The Buffalo Police Department received more than 3,000 calls late Thursday and about two-thirds were related to the weather, Lt. James Watkins said.

"There are power lines going down all over the place," he said.

Crews worked into the night to restore power, but many customers were expected to remain in the dark through the weekend and into next week, National Grid energy company spokesman Steve Brady said.

"This is extremely heavy snow and most of the trees still have most of their leaves, he said. "We can't do a complete damage assessment until the snow stops falling."

Dozens of schools were closed and states of emergency were declared in the City of Tonawanda, and towns of Cheektowaga, Elma, Lancaster, Akron, and Depew.

Unnecessary driving was banned in Buffalo and suburbs Amherst, Blasdell, Orchard Park and Hamburg.

"We have a condition where 80 percent of the roads are impassable," said Lt. Stephen McGonagle of the Amherst Police Department.

Officials said the snowstorm caused flight delays and cancellations at Buffalo's airport, which was shut down for almost two hours late Thursday.

Meanwhile, tree branches were strewn across the roads around the region. A large box maple tree split in half, falling on Joan Casey's home in Buffalo.

"The whole house shook," Casey said. "We were very afraid. Originally I thought it was just the thunder, and then I came outside and I couldn't believe it."

    National Coming Out Day

No, this isn't a personal announcement.  I just think it's important to make people aware that it's OK to be who you are.

National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11 by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities and their allies.

The day commemorates October 11, 1987, when 500,000 people marched on Washington, USA, for gay and lesbian equality. National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

In the United States, the Human Rights Campaign manages the event under the National Coming Out Project offering resources to LGBT couples, parents and their children as well as straight friends and relatives to promote awareness of LGBT families living honest and open lives.

    Soup's on

It's officially soup season.  This morning I woke up and it was cold, the leaves are changing and falling on the groud ...yep, it's soup season.  So to kick it off I went to Quizno's for a bowl of chicken and corn chowder.  You may remember that I discovered this soup last year and was rather fond of it.
I arrived at Quizno's just past 12 noon and was worried that there might be a long wait.  The line wasn't too bad but it was a whole new crew!  They must have changed ownership and what will this do to my chowder?  Thinking that this was a chain I felt comfortable enough that my chowder would be the same.  I make my purchase and go back to work.  All settled in, I'm ready for the chowder that I haven't had since last spring.  I open it up and it's not the same consistancy.  SIGH  It's more like soup than chowder but that's ok because I have crackers.  They never give enough crackers.  Anyway, it still tasted the same and it was good.
I think I'm going to visit all the local Quizno's and see if the chowder varies by store.

Spider Causes Man to Lose Control of SUV
    Thursday, October 5, 2006
    Associated Press

    Levant, Maine (AP)
A Levant man told police he lost control of his 2003 Lincoln Navigator after he was startled by a spider on Wednesday morning.
James Lee, 28, was trying to get out of the SUV when it smashed into a tree. He walked away with a bloody nose caused by the air bag.
But, it could've been worse. At least it wasn't the new Volvo XC90 he won in a contest.
Last month, Lee was one of 11 people from across the country to win a new vehicle from McDonald's, the Bangor Daily News reported. After finishing a Big Mac extra value meal, he got the winning game piece for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" game.
He hasn't taken delivery of the new vehicle yet.

Quote of the Day (not to be expected daily)

"What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed?
And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven
and there plucked an strange and beautiful flower?
And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand?
    Ah, what then?"
